Don’t Be Afraid – The First Toy was a fun little game I discovered while Googling and hopping around on GameJolt and finally over to Steam to find the demo. The link above goes directly to the demo page on Steam so you can download and enjoy it immediately.
I was looking for something quick to play and I discovered Don’t Be Afraid. It took me somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour and a half to complete the game and though I did think the game was going to be hard in the first 10 minutes or so, I struggled on and made it through the puzzle or hard part or search I needed to complete to progress to the next section. And I’m glad I did.
The pacing in the game is excellent. There were a few scares that definitely gave me a jolt and there’s plenty of serial killer vibes and mannequins and creepy dolls to keep the immersion going. Now don’t get turned off by those standard tropes I just mentioned because the game is very well put together and the ambiance of the game makes everything fit eerily and creepily.
The puzzles aren’t overly difficult however you will have to think to get through a few spots. There’s an abstract puzzle or two to deal with but nothing Mensa level which made the game challenging, but definitely very playable. You might have to trial and error a few things (or not if you’re really good) and for me this just added to the playability factor.
So, if you’re bored, enjoy horror games, and have 45 minutes to an hour and a half to spare, I don’t think you’ll be upset with Don’t Be Afraid. Plus, if you enjoyed this game as much as I did, keep in mind this is just the demo and the full game is available on Steam for just $9.99. or possible slightly cheaper on other gaming venues.
