I’m so into my horror movies that it’s rare I select something that is not horror. However, tonight as I was perusing my Netflix offerings I noticed the movie Seventh Son. I moused over the image for the short trailer/preview Netflix shows when you point at it and noticed that Jeff Bridges was in this movie. Like Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges just can’t do a bad character and his acting abilities are up the with the best of them, bar none. Jeff Bridges just makes movies better. So against my better judgment, I decided to watch this movie.
The movie is set in what seems to be 1700’s England but it’s a bit difficult to tell. The cinematography is great and special effects are top notch, as they should be coming from big-name studios like Universal and Legendary. With an all-star cast featuring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore (rawr), Djimon Hounsou, Alicia Vikander, and even Jason Scott Lee (though you will not recognize him and I bet after watching the movie you still won’t be able to figure out what part was his). The movie is very polished and though not my favorite genre or even movie, it was a pleasant departure from what I usually watch and I watched it all the way through in one sitting, which is rare for me, and can be another gauge for you in deciding whether to watch this offering.
This is a fantasy movie featuring witches, dragons, an ogre (I think, hint hint), swords, spells, and galloping horses. There are some great action scenes, some in the moment comedy, and I’ve discovered it is just a fun movie to watch. So when your done watching all those horror movies I review, you can watch this for something different. I think I’m going to do the same and do movie reviews on other genres, not just horror.
So grab some popcorn, the wifey, and/or the kids and sit down for a nice family watchable movie with heroes, heroines, and ugly ogres.
